A clinical study on the gingival recession following the periodontal therapy in labial surface of maxillary anterior teeth

Abstract
This study was undertaken to compar ~ the gingival recession on labial side of maxillary anterior teeth during 5 weeks after peril dontal therapy. 21 patients with adult periodontitis in maxillary anterior teeth participated in. the study. Scaling and root planing, subgingival curettage and modified Widman flap procedures were randomly performed. The following conclusions could be made:
1. For pockets 1-3mm, the gingival recession was distinct until 1 week and remained stable thereafter in all three procedures. When recession was compared between the procedures at each examinations, modified Widman flap had greater recession than scaling and root planing and subgingival curettage. Statistically significant differences were found between modified Widman flap and scaling and root planing at 1 week and 3 weeks, and between modified Widman flap and subgingival curettage at 1 week. (p<.05)
2. For pockets 4-6mm, the gingival recession was distinct until 1 week in all three procedures, and then slightly decreased until 3 weeks in scaling and root planing and modified Widman flap procedure. After 3 weeks, there was increased recession in all three procedures. At each examinations, modified Widman flap had greater recession than scaling and root planing and subginival curettage. Statistically significant difference was found between modified Widman flap and subgingival curettage at 5 weeks. (p05)
3. When recession was compared between each pocket depths, the magnititude of recession following periodontal therapy was positively related to the magnititude of the original pocket depth.
